Notes: New Farm Share and Halloween

Today is the first pick up for my new fall farm share with the Small Family Farm. I’m super excited! I didn’t expect we would get any fresh green produce, but they still have some spinach and broccoli that was harvested before frost damage. The spinach is diiiiirty from the recent rains, but such is nature, and it just needs a good soak and spin in my salad spinner. You can also see in the picture that the brussels sprouts came right on the stalk. How cool is that? If you have never harvested brussels sprouts before, they are kind of fun. You just pop them off the stalk and store in a bag in the refrigerator. They will keep for weeks, however brussels are one of my favorite veggies so I tend to eat them almost every week through December. A lot of the rest of the produce is for storage and will make its appearance over the next several months.

Halloween is this week and we made a tough decision to stay home. I have a scavenger hunt set up for the kids and we have our movies picked out for our Halloween Movie Marathon (Ghostbusters, Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Casper). Add in my Grandma’s “Ghoul”ash and some pumpkin pie and we have a party! I like to use food to create lasting memories for my kids and this holiday is no different. If you are sad about missing out on trick or treating this year, I totally get it. But honestly, I am looking forward to enjoying the time with my kids before they don’t want to hang out with me anymore and they actually seem pretty excited about our plans. How are you celebrating?
