Notes: Take a trip to your local farmer’s market this weekend and find some vegetables that are in season that you can add to your soup, scrambled eggs, salad, and kebabs. I’ll be looking for some tasty greens, arugula, asparagus and mushrooms.
Green tip of the week: If you are getting low on body wash, this may be a good time to consider switching to bar soap. It is an easy swap and oh so good for the environment due to less water usage in production and lack of plastic packaging. That is, as long as you choose brands that are wrapped in non-plastic coated paper/cardboard or even no packaging at all. Beware, there are plenty of soaps wrapped in single use plastic, although still less then used to make a bottle of body wash. If you haven’t used bar soap in a while, you may be surprised at the selections now available. There are some really good soaps out there made from olive oil, goat’s milk, and other skin nourishing ingredients. The main reason why I switched was to avoid the plastic packaging, and boy am I glad I did! Once you switch you will never go back. Bar soap does not dry out my skin as much as liquid body wash. The bars also last longer and are much cheaper. And you may be able to find soap produced locally. There are many home-based businesses in my area that make soap. Once you’ve switched to bar body soap, consider also switching to bars for shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, and shaving (if you find one with a good lather). Truthfully, soap is soap and one bar could be used for all these things, but personally there are certain oils that work better for my body versus my hair. Some traditional brands are really cheap, but you do have to be careful as the ingredients may not be the best. Check out these brands:
- LuSa Organics (made in Wisconsin)
- Ethique (made in New Zealand, but only place I could find a good conditioner bar without synthetic fragrances),
- Patcha (You can find it at Whole Foods and other health food stores. The whole family loves picking out their own “flavor” and there is no packaging when purchased in-store)
