Notes: Food Privilege
Every week I share meal plans mostly based off of locally grown foods. I take pictures of my produce, usually organic. I get really personal about every aspect of how our family sources food, stores food, and cooks food. I love doing this and I do it because I think it is so important for human health and the health of our environment to return to a smaller food system and mostly home cooking.
But, it is also not lost on me how privileged my family is. We are lucky to live in an area with fertile soil and a large selection of organic farms. We are fortunate enough to have jobs that pay us a living wage – even enough so that we can pay up front for a farm share every year. We own a car so I can drive right to a farm or drop off location to pick up produce. There are local farmers who are willing to deliver meat straight to our front door every month. We can afford a piece of property large enough for some gardens and room to spare. And we have a grocery co-op close by that sells a large assortment of organic foods and works hard to find as many local producers as possible.
I know our way of eating isn’t the norm for everyone. I know that we are blessed in many ways. So, instead of just preaching to more privileged people every week, I also like to put my money where my mouth is. I’ve made a donation to help underprivileged families access good food and I invite you to do the same.
Cassie and Mike Noltnerwyss are the owners of Crossroads Community Farm, where we get our summer produce farm share. They have a goal to provide 20% of their organic produce to families in need through a partnership with the Mellowhood Foundation and Neighbors Helping Neighbors. That translates to 100 boxes of fresh, local, veggies EVERY WEEK to families in the Madison, WI area that wouldn’t normally have access to this type of food. If you want to help them reach their goal, check out the GoFundMe page here. Let’s show these generous farmers some love!!
