This homemade pizza dough recipe is the bomb!! Every Saturday, my husband gets out the flour and whips together this pizza dough. It has become a family ritual that our kids look forward to and it makes meal planning a cinch. Our toppings vary depending on the season. Summer usually means fresh pesto pizza, and in winter we use a tomato sauce base. Throw on whatever vegetables you have on hand and you have a dinner winner!  It truly is so quick, fun, and easy. The clean up? Not so much – but trust me it is worth it!

Doesn’t that look delicious? All you need to complete your meal is a fresh side salad and a good pour of your favorite red. Now I don’t want to get off topic, but I recently discovered this delicious Joel Gott Cabernet that I’ve been recommending to all my friends and family. I’m usually your typical $3 buck chuck wine buyer and NEVER buy a bottle over $10, but I splurged on this wine as a gift (okay $5 more dollars might not constitute a splurge but…). When we opened the bottle it was sublime! Very smooth for the price. It is now my go to wine and I had to spread the word to all you red wine drinkers out there. Look at Costco for the cheapest price. You are welcome!

One last note – here is a great way to streamline pizza night so that you can make a quick meal out of it. Make several batches at once and freeze the dough. I use these silicone bags (pictured above). You can “burp” them to make them air tight and the pizza dough will keep for months. They work much better than a plastic bag at preventing freezer burn. When you are ready, just pop the bag into the refrigerator the night before so that it defrosts and is ready to roll out on pizza night. If you forget to defrost it, you can submerge the bag in warm water until it unfreezes. Not only will this ensure that you can put together a meal quickly, but you can have extra dough in the freezer for unexpected guests. And trust me, once your friends find out about your homemade pizza night, they will be showing up at your door in droves!

Homemade Pizza Dough

The best pizza dough recipe! Makes a great thin or medium crust.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Rise Time 45 minutes
Course Main Course
Cuisine American
Servings 2 large thin crust pizzas

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 tsp quick rise yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 and 1/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  • Turn oven onto lowest setting.
  • Combine all ingredients in a large bowl with fingers and knead until well combined and gather into a ball.
  • Cover the bowl with a damp towel and place on a cookie sheet. Turn off the oven and place the bowl/sheet inside. Let dough rise for 45 minutes.
  • Scrape the dough out of the bowl with generously floured fingers and shape into a ball. At this point my husband, who is our expert pizza dough maker, recommend chilling in the refrigerator for about an hour if you have the time as it is a bit easier to work when it is cool, but this is totally optional.
  • Roll out the dough and place on a greased baking sheet or pizza stone. Add toppings of your choice and bake at 425 degrees F for 12-20 minutes depending on how loaded down with toppings your pizza is. Less time for soft crust, more time for crisp crust.

Notes

Add pesto and tomatoes or tomato sauce with mozzarella or really any thing you desire! Load on the veggie toppings and serve with a side salad and you can turn this into a healthy meal.
You can make the pizza dough ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for 2 days. Another option is to freeze batches of dough in silicone bags (see picture above). When you are ready to use, pop in the refrigerator the night before to allow the dough to defrost and then roll out as above.
